About Arcademy: A How-to Guide

Why an about section?

Quite often, we'll get a very, very familiar question here at the Arcademy. "What the hell is the Arcademy?". We know VERY well that just about everything we do is a bit different than normal, a little unorthodox, sometimes questionable and rarely stable, but figured that a primer on the site's major sections would help alleviate some pain and solve the more frequents "what is this, and how do I benefit?" style questions. If you've asked these questions before, you know who you are, and this is for you.

Areas of note

Covered on this page are Reviews, Library, Tests, Challenges, Leagues, Library, Forum, Arc TV. Everything on this page will be updated periodically, and new sections may be added as needed. If something new pops up on the site, you can be sure something will appear here eventually. This guide is always evolving depending on what information is required for changes to Arcademy, and to answer frequently asked questions that arise.

What it is

We like Reviews and Previews here at Arcademy. They go a long way towards making sure players are educated about all the games at their disposal, inform them about what's coming soon, and otherwise allows an easy way to share one's experiences and be heard! Unfortunately, so many reviews available today make a habit of discrediting themselves, invalidating their own scoring systems, and keep many of their policies hidden. We think this can be done better. By adding contexts to player's reviews such as game costs, acquisition type, clearly dividing pros and cons, focusing separately on the player experience, and requesting proof of gameplay to validate a review's claims, reviews can once again have full merit. By tracking and aggregating all of those review scores and costs over time, we can also contextualize on a wide scale why games perform the way they do, and when. It's a big undertaking, and one that's worth exploring.

How do I earn points?

Submit your very own complete review to the Arcademy to earn points. Simple as that! However, if you want to take it a step further, you can verify your reviews with proof for an added bonus, and complete related challenges or events for an even bigger points boost!

What it is

It goes without saying that we're passionate about games, and anyone around us knows we have something to share on all manner of topics, from exposing new and retro games for a wider audience to enjoy, to exploring a wider world of interactive entertainment, and even diving deep into the intricate and intriguing facets of the industry and game development. More important than anything is an honest, positive and passionate look into the vast world that is gaming.

Library entries are not just for us. Articles and media can be authored or sourced by members of the Arcademy community. If we find people who are passionate about a specific genre, franchise, platform or anything else, we'll promote those posts and articles, rewarding those members with points and passes for what they bring to the table.

What it is

The Arcademy Tests, a repository of daily questions and decade spanning categories across all games history and current events. Updated regularly, there is always a new question or two each day with batch additions to the decade tests weekly. Acting as a way for players to challenge their games knowledge, the tests are another method to learn and discover games and events new and old, collaborate with the community to solve daily riddles, and compete to find out who's minds are the most tuned and primed for trivia.

How do I earn points?

Answer questions, get points! Possibly the easiest of all methods, each correct answer earns points for the player. Daily questions often earn more than individual decade test questions, and if you're lucky, you'll be met with special hard mode questions with bonus points values.

What it is

Where Decade Tests and Daily Questions test a player's knowledge, Arcademy Challenges are the primary test of a player's skill and ability. Often the challenges are simple and straightfoward, beating a game's single player campaign, ranking characters to certain levels, meeting quest objectives or coming first in an online multiplayer match. However, we like to mix things up and challenge players to complete objectives in peculiar, unique or unorthodox ways. Playing a sniping mission? Beat the boss with a melee weapon. Playing on the hardest difficulty? Complete a mission without killing any enemies. Are you a completionist? Try completing a game with the minimum amount of items possible. Other times, challenges are just silly, like pausing a game with twenty enemies on screen, which in the case of many older games can be QUITE a tough task.

The primary goal of Challenges is to give players new ways to play the games they love, and ideas for games to play which they've never seen, regardless of platform. Completing challenges is a clear sign of skill, tackling a wide variety of titles, and is worthy of a solid points reward. On occasion there will be hard mode challenge variants which can be completed for additional rewards!

What it is

Tests were a show of knowledge and Challenges were a show of skill. Leagues and leaderboards take all of a player's abilities and pits them against their fellow Arcademy members in high score leaderboards, fastest time races, seasonal leagues, online tournaments, pools and live events. There's no bigger showing or accolade for a member than competing in and reigning victorious through tough competition, and this is Arcademy's venue for rewarding these pressure filled feats.

How do I earn points?

In most cases, simply qualifying for brackets in a tournament or placing on a leaderboard will earn players points in increasing amounts the better they fare. However, winners of competitions will earn additional prizes and trophies for standing above the rest, and passes granting access towards elite tiers of rewards.

What it is

Arcademy stands by its main mantras of discovering and exploring games, sharing one's passion for games, and rewarding players for their passion. The forums are a nice, simple way for members to directly share, meet and discuss their pastime, their most wanted titles, offer their thoughts on current events and industry events. It's also a place where we take feedback, talk directly with the community, answer questions, and keep things honest and clear for everyone. We've always enjoyed close knit communities in games, so it's only fitting to keep the forum spirit alive!

How do I earn points?

There's no active way to earn points on our forums. However, we DO like to promote members who contribute positively to discourse, the atmosphere and content available. If we see posts or activity that stands out, points will occasionall be awarded as thanks. It's not as flashy or lavish as other section rewards, but it's still appreciated.

What it is

The TV and media section, where we showcase both our own and partner content, shows, podcasts, broadcasts, archives, trailers and other media. On occasioans where we have live events or shows, streams are made available to everyone to join in and offer real time feedback, participation and sometimes direct inclusion in whatever we come up with.

How do I earn points?

In the case of live broadcasts, rewards and points are awarded to attending and participating members, sometimes at random, sometimes for completing a live challenge, sometimes as a result of our own performances. There's a wide range of off the cuff methods to earning points in this area, most of which aren't known until streams are live.
